Organizations wanting more diverse mem- bership might find ways to compensate key talent for their time and contributions, while creating membership payment structures that offer need-based assis- tance. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is...the White moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to
a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct actions.’”
equity: supporting those who face such barriers as lacking internet access or working multiple jobs
It can be difficult to believe that seem- ingly benign policies and practices have racist underpinnings, but the more that we dissect the systems we live within, the clearer it becomes how indifference fuels injustice. We must remember that pursuing a goal of equality alone doesn’t account for the ways in which economic challenges and disadvantages contribute to success or failure. Equality is merely
