98 LIFE | CHARLOTTE PERRIAND
After World War II, Perriand offered to collaborate with Le Corbusier on Unité d’Habitation, an affordable housing project. He refused to fully collaborate; in- stead, he invited her to design the kitchen—which he believed was appropriate work for a woman and mother.
“I would be very happy
if you could contribute to the practical structural aspects of the settings which are within your domain, that is to say the knack of a practical woman,
talented and kind
at the same
time.”

Perriand designed
Les Arcs, a ski resort, when she was in her sixties. The staggered building steps down the side of the mountain, blending with the snow.
