CONFIDENCE EQUITY
In many college classrooms, women students outnumber men. International students and people of color are growing populations in design programs. Today, the White male design student may find himself in the minority rather than the majority. Nonetheless, White men often are among the most vocal students in the room and may be treated with special respect by faculty. Perhaps an outspoken young man grew up around teachers, parents, and coaches who praised him for sharing his views. However, others
in the room should also have a chance to cultivate their talent for communication. Even someone who seeks to be a leader should share space and allow others to speak.
> Be patient. After asking for comments from the group, give people a chance to think about their response.
> Take turns. Instead of asking people to raise their hands to speak, go around the room in a sequence.
> Use objects. Give everyone a card, straw, or other token. A person can’t contribute again until everyone has used their token.
> Invite participants to write down comments before asking for volunteers to speak. A shy person may feel bolder after noting their thoughts in writing.
> Don’t be a jerk. If you’ve been talking a lot, it’s time to shut up and listen.
I tried to talk to him about this behavior last week.
I’m so ready to hear a different point of view.

Dude, calm down.
dork
I wasn’t brought up to be the first one to speak.
