M (Mogam) Pillay (48) joined the SARB in 2016 as the Chief Operating Officer and was appointed as Chairperson of the SABN Board from February 2019. Mr Pillay holds BAcc and BCompt Honours degrees and a Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA). He has also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management, a Certificate in Global Management and an MBA. He is a Chartered Management Accountant and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
L L (Liziwe) Mda (55) joined the SABN as the Managing Director on 2 May 2018 and was appointed as the Executive Director to the SABN Board on 14 May 2018. She was also appointed as a non- executive director of the South African Mint Board with effect from the same date. Ms Mda holds a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Natal, an MSc degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), and an MBA from the Wits Business School.
R J G (Rob) Barrow (74) was elected as a non- executive director to the SARB Board on 1 July 2011. He was the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Services Board until his retirement on 30 June 2008. He chaired the SARB Audit Committee and served as a member of the SARB Risk Management Committee and Non-executive Directors’ Committee up until 30 July 2020 when he retired from the SARB Board, having served the maximum permitted tenure of nine years. He served as a member of the Board and the Human Resources Committee of the SABN. He was the Chairperson of the Audit and Risk Committee for both the SABN and South African Mint. He is a Chartered Accountant (SA). Mr Barrow completed three successive terms on the SABN Board in February 2021 and is therefore not eligible for re-appointment.
M G (Mike) Ilsley (60) was appointed to the SABN Board on 9 November 2015 and is also a member of the SABN Audit and Risk Committee. Mr Ilsley is a Chartered Accountant (SA).
P (Pradeep) Maharaj (58) is the SARB Group Executive: Currency Management, responsible for currency management and security functions. Mr Maharaj was appointed to the SABN Board on 7 November 2016. He was also appointed as a non- executive director of the South African Mint Board with effect from the same date. Mr Maharaj holds a BCompt degree and Honours degree in Public Management and Administration.
J (Joel) Sibanda (50) was appointed to the SABN Board on 6 May 2019. He was also appointed to the South African Mint Board with effect from the same date. He serves on the Mint’s Audit and Risk Committee and chairs the Human Resources Committee at both
currency-producing subsidiaries. He is currently employed as the Director at Makwehe Holdings. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Wits. He has attended a Management Advancement Programme and a Leading in Finance Programme at the Wits Business School and Harvard Business School respectively.
W (William) Mkhabela (52) was appointed to the boards of the SABN and South African Mint on 6 May 2019. He chairs the Social and Ethics Committee of the SABN and is a member of the SABN’s Audit and Risk Committee. He has extensive experience in the global fast-moving consumer goods and complex manufacturing environments. Mr Mkhabela is the Chief Operating Officer of Segen Solar (Pty) Limited, South Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree and a Master’s in Business Leadership.
H E K (Honey) Mamabolo (46) was appointed to the boards of the SABN and South African Mint on 12 March 2020. Ms Mamabolo is the Managing Director of the South African Mint. Prior to joining the Mint, she was Chief Executive Officer of Thebe Unico, a leading automotive and industrial chemical manufacturer. Before joining Thebe, Ms Mamabolo managed two clean energy debt funds at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and was involved in renewable energy projects and corporate finance transactions. Prior to the IDC, she served as a Senior Energy Consultant and Director of Operations for Energy Solutions Africa, focusing mainly on energy policy design, implementation, and transaction advisory and donor fund management. Ms Mamabolo’s early career was spent in the retail banking sector as a business process engineer, business analyst and project manager. Ms Mamabolo has a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering and holds postgraduate qualifications in Financial Management, Strategy Planning and Change Management.
T M (Terence) Nombembe (59) was elected as a non-executive director to the SARB Board on 1 July 2014. He served as the Auditor General of South Africa from 2006 to 2013. He was the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants until November 2018 when he joined the State Capture Commission as Head of Investigations. He chairs the SARB Audit Committee and serves as a member of the SARB Board Risk and Ethics Committee and Non-executive Directors’ Committee. Dr Nombembe was appointed to the boards of the SABN and South African Mint on 16 February and 15 March 2021 respectively and has been confirmed as the Chairperson of the Audit and Risk Committee at both entities. Dr Nombembe is a Chartered Accountant (SA) and has a BCom and BCompt (Honours) degrees, and has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Accounting Science.
