Then we reached a crescendo with ASSISI with all its uniqueness and mystique. The Basilica of St Francis is in- credible with its different levels. The parts affected by the earthquake of1997 have been restored so well that one would not notice the damaged areas. The town has an endless high street flanked by small arts and crafts shops and flower baskets hanging outside giving it a gentle touch of nature.
There are a few hotels and religious guesthouses in town, but the ideal is to stay on the outskirts to imbue that special atmosphere and relax. The
Valle di Assisi resort, a newly built hotel, offered an extraordinary panoramic view of the Basilica as a backdrop. This modern hotel has rooms as well as small villas for families on the estate.
There are excellent spa facilities. They have a very good cuisine, and also produce their own wine.
