Slow Shopping Is Here!
What is Slow Shopping?
Some years ago a lady called Katherine Vero assisted her mother to go shopping on a regular basis. However, it
had become quite a struggle for her mother to cope with being in a noisy environment. It could be quite upsetting at times and so Katherine came up with a plan of action. She approached the manager of Sainsbury’s store in Gosforth and asked if it would be possible to set up a Slow Shopping session each week. The idea is that the music is turned down, the lights are turned up a bit, there are extra staff on the shop floor to assist and there are chairs dotted about the place.
Sainsbury’s are very community minded and are part of Gosforth Dementia Friendly Group. Thus the manager was only too pleased to assist. Now there is a Slow Shopping session each week at that branch. It is designed for anyone who has a mental or physical impairment and their carers. I think it is a fantastic idea.
As a member of Gosforth Dementia Friendly Group I thought that it would be a good idea if Emmersons Solici- tors could also introduce Slow Shopping to our office. Katherine Vero came to train our staff how to help our clients who may have physical or mental impairment of any type. On the 14th of June we will, at last, be able to launch or FREE drop in scheme.
Between 1-3pm every Tuesday we will have staff available at our Gosforth office to offer free advice relating to Lasting Powers of Attorney,Wills, Estate Planning, Court of Protec- tion and Later Life Divorce and Separation. The latter sometimes occurs at the same time as one spouse happens to have early stage dementia and this therefore requires different advice to the usual divorces that we deal with.
How Can We help You?
We can give advice on the effects of a Lasting Power of Attorney, in particular how you can appoint Attorneys to assist you with those things that you can no longer do for yourself. This may be paying bills, setting up and managing bank accounts, paying for care, obtaining welfare benefits to help you afford that care.
If you have no one else available to mange your affairs then you can appoint me as your Attorney and I can do all of this for you. I can arrange your house insurance, pay your

bills, deal with old standing orders and direct debits. Recov- er overpaid bills, deal with social services on your behalf.
If you need to go into a care home I can help arrange this and then mange the payment of bills to the home.
We can also give advice on appointing a Deputy under The Court of Protection. This becomes necessary if it is too late for a client to appoint an attorney as they no longer have sufficient mental capacity to do so.
Many clients come in to see us when they suspect that their spouse is beginning to lose mental capacity. They may have early onset Dementia. Having drafted Wills and Powers of Attorney for thirty years I can usually tell what is going on. I know that the couple will not have had a conversation about this. But I can usually pick up on the concerns of the spouse who has determined that a trip to see me is now necessary.
This is a very worthwhile visit as we can provide so much essential information. Such as how to claim Attendance Allowance, how to provide for adult children and a client who may need to go and live in a care home.We can give advice on arrangement of bank accounts, life assurance and pension provision.
Why Not Drop In To See How We Can Help You?
Having done your shopping at Sainsburys why not pop in to see us to see how we can assist you or your friend or relative.Tea and coffee will be provided.
In the meantime, if you require help before the 14th of June please don’t hesitate to contact me jacqueline.emmer- son@emmersons-solcitors.co.uk or 01912846989.
