The North East sites that have been shortlisted for a Rolls-Royce development
Two regions in the North East have been shortlisted for the home of Rolls-Royce’s first factory that’s set to build modular reactors.
Developing body’s were asked to bid for the initial site for the SMRs earlier in the year. The investment comes in the form of £200m, as well as the creation of over 200 jobs.
A change to power
Rolls-Royce’s project claims it can cut the cost of nuclear power by building reactor parts in factories. It then plans to construct a series of reactos, that would be able to power one million homes each.
IAMP in Sunderland and Forrest Park in Newton Aycliffe have now been named as par t of the shor tlist of locations in England and Wales for the factory. The final location will be chosen from the current shortlist, which includes locations in Cumbria, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and North Wales.
Right now, a technical team is reviewing the potential shor tlisted locations, based on their access to major road networks, local skills and local incentives for renewable power generation.
More than one plant
Two other plants are expected to be built, each focusing on mechanical engineering and plumbing parts for reactors, though the locations have yet to be decided. They will be picked from a long-list of areas who pitch for the project.
Rolls-Royce has previously announced that they are confident that they can deliver its first mini nuclear plant by its 2029 target if the Government commits this year to the technology it needs.
This development is fantastic news for our local area, and could make our area a leader of manufacturing components for British-made tech.
