Molby (captain), Wright, Saunders, Rush, McManaman and Thomas.
We held our own in the first-half and had two great chances within a minute with Grobelaar turning a long- distance Rogan effort round the post and from the resultant corner Ball headed to Byrne who mishit the ball from a few yards out. It was Byrne’s goals that had really got us to the Final so it seemed harsh to criticise him. We also had a penalty appeal turned down when Jones appeared to trip Davenport. Referee Philip Don was maybe balancing things out when he denied Liverpool a penalty in the dying moments of the half when Bracewell brought McManaman down.
So, the first-half ended goal-less but Liverpool took the lead just after half-time through a Michael Thomas goal after being fed by McManaman. That was a bummer but things got worse as almost straight after their goal I lost the radio signal completely. After frantic twiddlings and positioning the radio all over the place for over a quarter of an hour I got it back again only to discover that Liverpool had got their second. Rush had scored a typical poacher’s goal after Thomas had set him up. We’d brought on Hardyman for Rush and later Hawke subbed Armstrong but we hardly seemed to get a kick after that and it ended 2-0 to Liverpool. There was a bit of a carry-on when the medals were given out as we were given winners’ medals by mistake. I concluded that I’d had my lifetime’s portion of F.A. Cup glory back in 1973
