World Cup games which took place at Roker Park in summer 1966. One permanent souvenir of the World Cup was the new roof over the Fulwell End but the Roker End was never covered.
One result that always sticks in my memory was on 31st December 1966 when on his debut the nineteen year-old Bobby Kerr scored in the eighty-ninth minute to give us a win over Man City. That was real Roy of the Rovers stuff and we went on an eleven match unbeaten run in early 1967. I was at the cup matches against Brentford and Peterborough, which we won 5-2 and 7-1 respectively. I’d never heard Peterborough’s nickname before and was confused by the constant reference to the Posh in the Echo. Posh what? During that period they used to cover the pitch with straw to keep the frost off and it was duly scraped off and left at the sides of the pitch. It was great stuff for us kids to climb into during the games.
