The p.a. announcers in the old days were very amateurish compared to now and would often be thrown by having to pronounce any unusual name. God knows how they would’ve coped with the galaxy of foreign names in today’s game. Anyway, we were playing Luton at home one evening and one of their players was called Lil Fuccillo. My mate Col turned to me as the guy was announcing the first names and, pointing to Fuccillo’s name in the programme, said, “I bet he mucks this one up.” A few seconds later there was an ominous pause before the announcer finally managed to pronounce it, “Fuchelso.” Another mate Gary made a good crack at a game during the festive season one year in the late Seventies. Before the match the team had come onto the pitch each bearing a card with a letter on it so that when they stood in a line it spelled out SEASONS GREETINGS or whatever. We lost the game and Gary suggested that the players come on again with different cards spelling out SORRY.
One time the Dagenham Girl Pipers gave a performance on the pitch before a game or maybe at half time but as they played there was a repeated chant from the Fulwell End of, “Get them off! Get them off!” that made me feel rather ashamed. Another time Monty, who’d returned to the club in some kind of PR capacity, did a circuit of the pitch at half-time to promote something or other. He jogged around accompanied by several young women and they threw balls
