SUNDERLAND SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL
For film fans and aficionados, this
month sees the return of SSFF, also
known as the Sunderland Shorts Film
Festival. The festival, which has now been
a staple part of the Sunderland culture
calendar since 2015, is back and will run from
Monday 17th to Saturday 22nd October where
it will be ready to do what it does best: showcase
a variety of short films projects from all manner of
creators to audiences within the heart of the North
East. The five-star rated event has film projects for every audience, with its variety of films including everything from dramas and comedies to horrors and documentaries. The festival will also champion budding new filmmakers who are emerging on the scene as well as BAFTA and Academy Award-nominated films and projects. The event will also see some submissions receive an extra element of attention as there are a number of awards on offer. The awards include the ‘Best’ film in categories of: drama, comedy, documentary, horror, sci-fi, art and experimental, student, young and emerging, and best music video. There will also be a local recognition award, audience favourite, and judge’s choice award handed out. The festival will open on Monday 17th with a surprise event taking place at the National Glass Centre: a special showcase from Oska Bright, and the Art
and Experimental Screening. Tuesday will see music videos being showcased and two screenings that will show artists’ work from both the North East
and across the globe. Student and comedy screenings are on Wednesday’s schedule

screenings, in addition to a selection of Film
Hub North’s favourites. Saturday allows for social connections to be built and strengthened thanks to a networking event and meet and greet at City Hall. Closing things out on the Sunday will be animation, documentaries, drama, and local screenings. There will also be the Closing Awards Presentation and ceremony. With such a variety of content and opportunities for networking, masterclasses, and Q&A’s to experience in addition to watching projects, this is a must-attend event. GEORGINA SHINE
