STAGE
On Tuesday 4th October, Darlington Hippodrome welcomes the newest performance piece from Motionhouse Production Company. Founded back in 1988 by Louise Richards and Kevin Finnan MBE, the company has gone on to create a number of world-class dance-circus productions. They create pieces that range from full-length productions that tour across theatres, to flexible outdoor and large-scale performance events. Their sell-out performances integrate powerful narratives, incredible digital imagery, emotive musical scores, and athletic physicality. They take inspiration from common human concerns and connections to the world we live in, with some of their recent pieces exploring flooding, fear and captivity, pressures of time, energy, and the earth. The newest production they are touring is ‘Nobody’ which will explore the tension between our inner lives and how we make sense of the world around us. This full-length production, a dance-circus adventure, will bring digital imagery and live performance together to create a ‘living film’ for audiences to witness and also be a part of. ‘Nobody’ is an incredibly emotional but uplifting story filled with twists and turns along the way and it will see audiences experience the always spectacular and mesmerising choreography and visual magic that Motionhouse bring as they transform the world on stage before your eyes. With the addition of digital projections, there will also be a shape-shifting set to create the ever- evolving and changing environment where not everything in this crafted world is quite what it seems. Audiences will witness the stories of seven different characters as they embark on their own journeys of self-discovery whilst finding strength and support in each other along the way - but there are also a group of curious crows lurking in the background who are questioning every move our characters make. We get to follow along as our performers negotiate the ever-changing reality they find themselves in and search for the answers to their quandaries in the world which is slowly unravelling around them, causing them to ask the question: “Can working together help them to find out who they truly are?” With an awe-inspiring performance, this moving adventure is full of spellbinding and striking visuals and will stick with you thanks to its relevant and resonating messages. COMEDY
Fresh from her sellout show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, phenomenal stand-up comic, panellist and podcaster Maisie Adam brings her new show ‘Buzzed’ to Newcastle’s popular comedy venue, The Stand, on Thursday 6th October. Maisie’s comedy career kicked off with a bang in 2017 when she won the nationwide ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ competition and became only the fourth woman to achieve this accolade in the competition’s thirty-year history. The following year, she was nominated for the prestigious Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards for her debut show ‘Vague’ in which she picked up the Amused Moose National Comic Award for. Maisie exudes quirky energy and is incredibly watchable, with her quick-fire anecdotes and witty charm having won her an army of fans nationwide. Her new show, ‘Buzzed’, is all about Maisie’s infectious optimism for life, with the show’s title also lending a nod to the comic’s home buzzcut during lockdown. KIM BLUE
