SEYCHELLES TAKES ACTION ON MARINE PLASTIC POLLUTION
With more than 250 million tonnes of plastic estimated to make its way into our oceans by 2025, small non-governmental organisations of the Seychelles are taking action to combat the pollution.
The Ocean Project, the SIDS Youth Aims Hub and the Seychelles Islands Foundation, are three organisations pioneering projects to combat the impact of plastics in the Indian Ocean, whilst implementing new ways for the population to live sustainably.
In 2017, Seychelles banned plastic bags, cutlery and take away boxes and in 2019 a ban on plastic straws came into place. In addition, the Island Conservation Society and
the Seychelles Islands Foundation are two environmental organisations that manage several of Seychelles’ outer islands and have been carrying out regular beach clean ups.
Since its establishment, the Ocean Project has hosted coastal clean ups and collected tonnes of rubbish consisting of plastics.
