Any tips for securing funding?
Due to the reduction in
funding resulting from Brexit, it is more difficult to secure funding
than it previously was. The financial support and funding schemes listed here are some of the most accessible funds and grants but there may be more that your business is eligible for.
Ensuring that you provide as much relevant detail in funding applications is essential, as each application will be assessed against criteria to identify which applicants qualify for the funding. For example, you should fully explain how the funding will help the development of your business and the local economy.

Business Enterprise Fund (North East England)
The Business Enterprise Fund is available for SMEs is the North East who have been turned down for loans by high street banks. Start-up businesses and established businesses who are in the selected industries can apply for a loan of up to £250,000.
Digital Tech Resilience Grant (Newcastle)
Newcastle SME businesses who interact with customers on a face-to-face basis can apply for a Digital Tech Grant, which provides 50% towards technology that reduces the need for direct fact-to-face interactions. For example, introducing a digital payment system instead of cash handling.
Small Business Rates Relief
If your business property has a rateable value of less than £15,000, you can get relief on your business rates. You can contact your local council if you think that you are not receiving the small business rates relief you are entitled to or complete the small business rate relief form on your local authority’s website.
R & D tax Credits
R & D (Research and Development) tax credits are a government scheme that is applicable for innovative projects in the science and technology fields. SMEs that qualify can deduct an extra 130% of their qualifying costs from their yearly profit, in addition to the normal 100% deduction to make a total 230% deduction.
Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Business Rates Relief Scheme (RHL)
This scheme was introduced to support the businesses that form the heart of the high streets in the UK. The RHL scheme provides eligible, occupied retail, hospitality and leisure properties with 50% relief for business rates (up to a total of £110,000 per business) between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023. If you believe you are entitled to RHL and are not in receipt of it, contact your local council to check.
Social Entrepreneur/Social Business Awards
Funding is available for social entrepreneurs and established social businesses who can demonstrate a clear need for a social business or social improvement idea. You can apply for the funding through UnLtd.org.uk.
NEBSF (North East Business Support Fund)
The NEBSF offers grants of up to 35% of funding towards projects costing between £3,000 and £8,000. The funding is available to bring in external expertise that will help your business to grow, whichever industry you are in. For example, you could hire a web design expert to design a new business website and claim up to 35% of the costs of the project.
Help to Grow: Digital
SME businesses registered with Companies House and have been actively trading for over 12 months can apply for up to a 50% discount or up to £5,000 towards the cost of buying approved software products listed under the scheme.
