He could never hold down a first team place though and had loan spells at Gateshead and Hartlepool followed before joining Pools permanently in 2019. Molyneux left Victoria Park this summer to join Doncaster Rovers.
JOEL ASORO
Asoro was one of the few bright spots in a wretched 2017-18 season, with the youngster scoring three
goals and exciting fans with his pace and direct runs. The Swedish youth international left Sunderland after thier relegation however to join Swansea, where he played 14 games without scoring. Since then, his career has continued to stall somewhat, turning out for FC Groningen, Genoa and Djurgårdens IF, making little impact along the way.
ASHLEY FLETCHER
Fletcher struggled to make much of an impact at Sunderland after joining on loan from Middlesbrough
in January 2018, but by the end of the season, his performances had markedly improved, and he rounded off his stay at the club with a composed finish over the on-rushing goalkeeper. Upon his return to ‘Boro, he held down a more regular spot at the club before he made a surprise move to Watford in 2021. In January 2022, he was loaned out to New York Red Bulls, failing to score in any of his seven games.
SUBS
LEE CAMP
At the end of his time at Sunderland he somehow blagged a move to Championship club, Birmingham City. He subsequently joined Coventry City, Swindon Town, Clitheroe and most recently joined up with former Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson at Wrexham, a match made in heaven.
CALLUM MCMANAMAN
Another player who failed to live up to expectations
on Wearside, after leaving Sunderland, the scouse winger has been around a bit, playing for Luton, Wigan, Melbourne Victory and now turns out for League Two side, Tranmere Rovers.
JOSH MAJA
After an electric start to the 2018-19 season, Maja joined Bordeaux before being loaned out to Fulham and Stoke.
JAKE CLARKE-SALTER
Clarke-Saler has the dubious honour of being sent off for Sunderland twice in just 11 games. Officially still a Chelsea played until signing for QPR this summer, the double-barrelled centre half was loaned out to Vitesse, Birmingham and Coventry before finally flying the nest.
BALI MUMBA
Mumba became Sunderland’s youngest ever captain when he replaced John O’Shea, and after a promising 2018-19 season Mumba was restricted to EFL trophy
appearances thereafter and joined Norwich City
in 2020. He has since enjoyed a loan spell at Peterborough and recently made a temporary switch to Plymouth.
ELLIOT EMBLETON
Do I really need to tell you what he’s up to nowadays?
DENVER HUME
Hume would go on to become a first team regular on Wearside, and despite dividing opinion he made 62 appearances for the lads, scoring two goals before leaving to join Portsmouth in January 2022.
