be worth a lot more than whatever we paid for him. The fact that we’d never heard of him, and that the ‘Ammers fans are none to ‘appy that he’s left, speaks volumes for Speakman’s talent spotting. Let’s hope we can say the same about incoming keeper Alex Bass.
Conjuring up a deal for Jack Clarke to return was also something Paul Daniels would have proud of, don’t forget that it’s only three years since Spurs paid £10 million for him, a figure that’s been beyond anything we’ve spent in a season for... well, seasons. Patrick Roberts was very obviously a player looking for somewhere to call home after being loaned out to six clubs in his six years as a Man City player. Just like Clarke, he played only three senior games for his parent club and had cost City even more, which makes the recruitment system of Premier League clubs look rather wasteful. Jack Rodwell, anyone?

We’ve come out of a successful campaign and we’re in a good mood and have sold a daft amount of season tickets as a result, so let’s keep the mood upbeat and back the manager and team.

  Pre-season has proved much of a mixed bag, as such things usually do. We’ve had great pre-seasons followed by rubbish seasons, and rubbish pre-seasons followed by great seasons –although it’s been a while since the latter, admittedly. Against Rangers, who came across as quite arrogant, we looked the business, as we did for much of the Roma game. Dundee Utd saw another decent showing, while Bradford and Accrington brought bad results despite a very dominant hour in Lancashire.
 A trip to British West Hartlepool brought down the curtain on a the friendlies with a 1-1 draw featuring our second string as Neil continued to try different formations and personnel, and
