The Perils of Hot Weather
Heat stroke is a common emergency presentation at vets over the summer, most commonly in dogs. It is more common in brachycephalic dogs such as British and French Bulldogs, and dark coloured dogs. It can often be fatal and many dogs die despite treatment. It is also preventable.
Burnt pads are also often seen in the summer due to direct contact with hot concrete and sand.
To keep your dog safe in the hot weather:
• Do not walk your dog in the middle of the day (early morning and late evening are best)
• Ensure your dog has a shaded area to get out of the sun
• Ensure they always have access to drinking water
• Press your hand against the pavement – if it’s too hot to keep there it’s too hot for your dog’s paws!
• NEVER LEAVE
YOUR DOG IN THE CAR (EVEN WITH THE WINDOW OPEN)
If your dog shows signs of heat stroke (excessive panting; frothing at the mouth; brick red gums or collapse) – take them to the vet IMMEDIATELY: this is life threatening
You may cover your dog with a cold wet towel for the trip
DO NOT submerge your dog in cold water – the shock will kill them
