he initially celebrated in placatory style
before sprinting faster than he’d ever done to scream in Lee Johnson’s face. A foul on him by Winchester on 57 minutes saw Winiesta sent off with a straight red to add to his earlier yellow, and a penalty awarded. Naturally, he put it away and claimed the match ball with a typical cheeky finish on 75 as he clipped the ball over Patterson. Embleton was sufficiently wound up to get into a spat with an opponent in injury time, earning them both a booking, then Callum Doyle followed suit to clatter an opponent five minutes later, right in front of the benches, and Maguire led the charge as a melee ensued after which Doyle and an opponent were booked. Oh, and Lee Johnson sent to the stands. As ALS said at the time, “In the final analysis, the Workie-Ticket’s Workie-Ticket came out on top, as for some reason we’d completely forgotten what he reacts to and what he shies away from.” Haunting level? A pretty obvious 10/10.
If you’re wanting a haunting from someone who never played for us, but should have
if our scouts had been paying attention, then look no further than Clive Mendonca. London born but Sunderland bred, he’d spent eleven years dodging around the lower leagues before fetching up at Charlton in 1997. At the end of his first season, he faced his hometown club at Wembley in the Play Off Final. With his previous clubs, he’d scored twice against us, both for Grimsby, and he’d not found the net in the two league games for Charlton, but.... you know the story. He scored a hat-trick, most people leaving the game claimed they should have knacked him when they sat next to him at school, and the rest is history. Maybe he helped forge that unbeatable team spirit that saw us swashbuckler our way to the top of the table the following season, but for his antics at the national stadium in May 1998, he gets a Curse of The (non)Former Player haunting rating of 10/10. PS. Little-known fact. His uncle Ivor played test cricket for the West Indies.
