                  you could get neatly sixty thousand in Roker Park, and the Roker Roar used to terrify the other team, and we’ll never have a Roker Roar like that now, not like that noise anyway, it was like a twelfth man.”
“I remember lots of the players, and lots of good players used to come because we were good, really good and called the Bank of England because of the money we spent. I remember Trevor Ford scoring a
lot of goals. I’ll tell you one game I do remember well;
it was when Charlie Hurley made his debut and it was against Blackpool. We went over to that game, and we got beat six or seven nil. They had Stanley Matthews and even played with ten men for a while, but that was a bad one and we’d gone all the way over to Blackpool to see it. Then the next game we let six in. After that there was Harry Hooper that I liked to watch, he was a proper winger.”
“I liked Roker Park, and we had nice seats. If you remember, there was the Roker End, the Fulwell End, the Clock Stand, and the other one, the Main Stand. There used to be glass partitions on the second row, and we were in front of them near the halfway line, so
it was a good view. They were marvellous seats, then for some reason the Press took over our seats, and we had to move along the row towards the Fulwell End and we stayed there until we moved to the Stadium.”
“My husband retired in 1980, and he’d worked abroad
in Kuwait a lot, and we were out there for a short time. In 1970 we got our season tickets in the Main Stand, and we had them ever since. We’ve had Stadium seats since it opened, my granddaughter started coming with us when she was about nine, she still goes, avid supporter. Two of my granddaughters were with me at the Portsmouth game. Back then, when we first got our season tickets, you’d go to see the senior team one Saturday and then the reserves the next Saturday for free with your season ticket.”
“Favourite players: Len Shackleton. He was another Georgie Best, but I also remember Dickie Davis and back then they used to play right back, left back, centre forward, not like today when you don’t know who’s supposed to be playing where. You knew who they were and what position they played, not like today when they’re all over the shop. You don’t even know who they are sometimes.
All my family are supporters and they come with me now, but I used to go on my own when my husband was away. We’ve had some good times, and we’ve had some bad times. I keep hoping we’re heading towards some more good times, but at my age they need to hurry up and get out of this league.”
Eva, thanks for talking to us, and many belated birthday greetings
Thank you, and I hope I’ve been a help
