                  PIXIES
Pixies head to 02 City Hall in Newcastle this month so Ewan Gleadow caught up with lead guitarist Joey Santiago to speak about their new release, Tim Burgess, Jimi Hendix and more.
It feels like every new album from the reunion has sort of brought this new maturity with it...
Oh God, yeah. I mean, it's one of my favourite albums I've ever recorded, as far as being comfortable with it and the material and the growth of it. And we should be growing - and that's what we did. I genuinely love it.
don’t talk when we’re listening, you know?
It’s the perfect way to listen, in absolute silence...
That’s why I like vinyl. It takes a bit of effort to put it on - it’s not like a button. You know that saying, ‘it’s as easy as pushing a button’. You’re not pushing a button when you’re exposed.
You’ll make a conscious choice to put that on the player. You’re actually preparing to listen to it...
I even have a special chair for it. There’s an art to
listening.

It does feel like that next step, the one that bands are always clamouring for...
That's the whole goal right there. There are a few bands, maybe I don't pay attention
to enough, that have recorded albums later on in their years and it starts to not be interesting - except for Neil Young.
“It's one of my favourite albums”
It’sdefinitelylessappreciatedthanit usedtobe...
Because we don't do dance music, you know. I mean, I'm sure some band people, with some of their albums, they go “come on, take some drugs” and dance around without
really listen to the music.
Have you got a favourite track fromthisnewrelease?
It changes, but I do like ‘The Lord Has Come Back Today’.
It’s a stunning album, ‘Doggerel’...
I want a listening party.
You should! I think Tim Burgess would be up for it. You should get him...
Yeah, like a release day listening party. And I don’t want to mingle around. I just want to be, like, above and spy on people. It's like I almost want to put them in a theatre, turn the lights off and maybe a little bit of stage lights. We're not going to be there but we'll be like spying on you. If there are just a few little lights and no conversation, you can get the full spectrum of the music. That’s how we listen to it in the studio. We
Just one last bit on the Hendrix chord you’re fond of. Does it makeanappearanceonthisalbum? I bet I put it in there, maybe on ‘Haunted House’. It's somewhere in there. I forgot where I got it, but yeah. If you look at that chord, there’s just a slant. It happens in the interval of six which used to be deemed as an evil interval or the
devil’s interval. It’s very dissonant.
And finally, is soundtrack and movie work something you’d like to get back into?
I want to do it someday again as I have a new appreciation for it and I miss it. Back then I dreaded when I got a gig because it's a lot of work, but I think I know how to streamline now. I’ve learnt from my mistakes.
Their 02 City Hall date is now sold-out. To be added to the waiting list, head to seetickets.com.
