NEW SINGLE BY SHORE
‘STAR SIGN’
NE VOLUME RATING
‘Star Sign’, by Redcar outfit Shore, is one of those brilliant songs that gets stuck in your head for days. They’ve managed to craft maybe the perfect single here, with an earworm chorus and the ideal amount of buildup that makes it easy listening while hard-hitting - and just the right amount of showing off. The single takes on the novel concept of boy meets girl with the twist of using star signs to decide whether they're right for each other (like I used to do in secondary school), focusing on the initial meeting of the pair, with the vocalist desperate to get the girl’s phone number and bond with her, resorting to using star signs as a way to gauge their compatibility. Combining indie-rock influences of the early noughties in the foreground with its rhythms and melodies, while keeping a fresh, somewhat minimalist sound reminiscent of more modern bands such as Foals, the song wears its influences on its sleeve while seeking to be its own thing and doing their genre of music to a high standard. This minimalist approach plays into the single’s overall quality, with the production feeling especially refined and at a consistently high quality throughout. No one part of the song feels at all cluttered and on the contrary, feels well thought through like their vision has been fully realised with a lack of pretension, finding its strength in its simplicity and relatability. It has this particular cadence in its vocal melody that just digs into your brain for better or worse. I've personally never heard a local band release a song that has been this catchy for me. The naïvity of the lyrics, paired with the simplicity of the music, makes the single feel very succinct, with all the parts and aspects of it sort of matching in the way the vocalist wants their star signs to. I feel obliged to give this five stars, if simply for the reason that from listening to it, I know this is the song these guys set out to make. There is something to be said about doing something simple well - and they’ve nailed it. You can listen to ‘Star Sign’ now on all major streaming platforms. ADAM BRACCHI

AVARICE
‘LOST IN THE WAVES’ SINGLE
NE VOLUME RATING
This summer, get ready to get heavy with Newcastle band Avarice’s
new release, ‘Lost in the Waves’. Forming back in 2019, these guys have brought their hard-rock, heavy metal sound to the scene with a badass bang - and their new single will certainly keep their success going. The introduction starts quiet and slowly builds in volume before providing us with the ultimate,
amped-up crescendo. This track has everything you could want from a classic heavy track with raspy vocals, intense drum beats and guitar riffs that will have you rocking out for days to come. There are slow breaks throughout to bring the energy down
too before hitting the drop hard. And with the added screaming elements, listeners will not be disappointed. Get ready to rock out and dive deep as you let yourself get lost in the sonic waves of Avarice’s newest hit. You can listen to ‘Lost in the Waves’ now on all major streaming platforms. ADAM BRACCHI
