                 WAVES
at Various Venues, Sunderland
The streets of Sunderland are being taken over by the sound of music from both local and national bands this month with the return of Waves Festival. Last year’s inaugural festival was a massive success. And this year’s addition of Sunderland’s newest and most exciting venue, The Fire Station, as the main stage should make this year even bigger. At The Fire Station, The Pale White are headlining, who you might know from their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Infinite Pleasure’, from their hit single ‘That Dress’, or their electric gigs, like their last sell-out gig at The Independent, Sunderland two years ago or when they played festivals such as Glastonbury, Leeds and local(ish) festivals such as Tramlines and This is Tomorrow. That’s the main stage, but each of the other five venues has its own line-ups and headliners to look out for. The Independent is headed by Amsterdam-based indie rockers Pip Blom who, like The Pale White, sold out their gig at The Independent in April and have played festivals such as Glastonbury and Lolapalooza. They collaborated with Revive
Live for the tour of their latest album, and for a taste of their live performances, you can check out their live album too. Galaxians are bringing their modern ‘80s-disco sounds to The Peacock’s dancefloor too. They’ve been called a ‘tour de force of exuberant club energy’ by Clash magazine and have similarly joined The Pale White previously in playing Tramlines. For more indie-dance music, you can catch Sunderland’s own Vandebilt. Some other massive names are on the bill such as Ishmael Ensemble, one of the defining bands of the UK’s current jazz scene, who are playing twice, both through the day at The Fire Station and at The Peacock later in the day. Or, if you fancy listening to a different type of jazz, the award-winning Leeds-based band Yaatri will also
be playing. Tom A. Smith and Luke Royalty are other big local names that you can’t miss, with Tom A. Smith already supporting the likes of Sam Fender and Catfish and the Bottlemen at the age of just 18. With a phenomenal line-up, with more acts still to be announced at the time of writing, Waves will storm the shores of Sunderland on Saturday 5th November across The Fire Station, The Independent, The Peacock, The Ship Isis, The Bunker and Live Lounge, with acts spread across the day.
