The photo on page 203 shows the fans and connections of By By JJ (JJ Shot Glass-Adios A Todos, Dooley Authorized) gathered in the win- ner’s circle after his 2003 All American Futurity-G1 victory, including trainer Juan Gonzalez and breeder Rosella Anrin Prieto who co-owned the gelding with husband Nahum Prieto and daughters Rosella Anrin and Monique Prieto.
The sorrel gelding was ridden by James “JJ” Gonzales, who had qualified three horses to the race. It wasn’t a hard decision, however, for the jockey to choose to ride By By JJ in the finals. The “JJ” part of By By JJ’s name is in honor of JJ Gonzales. “They really have a bond,” Rosella stated after the victory. “The horse tries to bite if anyone goes near him, but he’ll snuggle and kiss JJ.”
By By JJ, entered All American Futurity as the second-fastest qualifier, and won the finals by a neck in :21.102 for a 103 speed index. The vic- tory capped off a freshman season that earned the gelding the title of AQHA High Money Earning Horse. By By JJ ended his racing career with a record of 29-6(1)-4(2)-6(3) and $1,207,274 in earnings.
This year’s $20,000 By By JJ Stakes was held at Ruidoso Downs on July 25 and was won by Wood Be Charming.
