         One of the most anticipated sire designations of the year goes to
the stallion that is the AQHA Leading Freshman Sire of Money Earners.
A title bestowed on the first crop sire with the highest foal earnings for the year. The 2018 SPEEDHORSE Stallion Register alone included 22 stallions that would be vying
for the freshman sire title for 2018. Five Bar Cartel was on that list. He sired 87 foals in his first crop with 58 starters that earned
40 ROM, six stakes winners and two stakes placed runners. His foals earned $1,222,605 to give him the title of 2018 AQHA Leading Freshman Sire of Money Earners.
Five Bar Cartel was foaled in 2011 and was bred by Esmeralda Flores of Sun City, California. He was transferred in March
of 2012 to A Regal Choice Inc., which
was formed by the team of Francisco and Esmeralda Flores with their son, Erik. This corporation was named after A Regal Choice, a stallion that raced in Esmeralda Flores’ name, who won the 2002 Los Alamitos Million Futurity-G1.
The Floreses consigned Five Bar Cartel to the 2012 Los Alamitos Equine Sale where he was a repurchase for $100,000. In February 2013, Five Bar Cartel was purchased by his current owner San Gregorio Racing Stables of Mira Loma, California. He is by Corona Cartel and out of Five Bar Molly by Dash Ta Fame.
Five Bar Cartel won his maiden on May 19, 2013. He came back in June to win his trial and then the finals for the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1. He qualified for the Golden State Futurity-G1, winning his trial and finishing fifth in the finals. Five Bar Cartel then qualified for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1, winning his
trial and finishing fourth in the finals. He had five wins in seven starts with earnings of $665,368 and he was named the 2013 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt.
As a three year old, Five Bar Cartel didn’t race until the All American Derby-G1 trials where he finished second and qualified for the finals, where he was second. His last two starts came in the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 trials and finals. He finished first in the trials and then came in fourth in the finals. Five
