New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Futurity-RG3
MITEY MAN
by Tracy Gantz
Trey Wood has trained many good horses, often picking them out at sales and starting them himself with his father, Blane. Mitey Man, owned by Bobby Simmons, came
along midway through the year, however,
and he captured the New Mexico State Fair Futurity-RG3 at Albuquerque on Sept. 24.
“They had told me that they felt that the horse had some talent, and he had worked pretty good,” said Wood. “There
wasn’t anywhere to run him
at first, and I started him at a
maiden race at Ruidoso. He
won against open company.”
That set up Mitey Man perfectly for this Futurity. The gelding won his trial
to qualify the fastest under jockey Edwuin Lujan and went off as the 13-10 favorite in the final. Mitey Man jumped out on top and never looked back, winning
wire-to-wire by 3/4-length in :19.691. The $120,584 winner’s share of the purse boosted the gelding’s earnings to $128,464.
“He’s just a professional horse,” said Wood. “He does his job and has really made a nice horse. The Simmons raised him and own the mare. I didn’t break him, but I got him about the middle of July. I think the horse is going to get better. He’s just figuring
out what his job is, and I’m excited about him.”
Before Wood got Mitey Man, he had run fourth and third in trials at Ruidoso. The gelding is now three for three under Wood’s tutelage.
Debra Laney bred Mitey Man in New Mexico from winner Neons Miracle, who has produced 100% money earners from three starters including, Mitey Moon, a full sister to Mitey Man,
who won the 2013 New Mexico Classic Futurity-RG2.
Magnifico Dragon (Zulu Dragon-Cassies Mag) ran second for jockey Mauro Salcedo. Cynthia Gonzalez trains the gelding for owner Daniel Balderrama.
A Sure First (First Moonflash-Sure Thats Hot) finished third. Alfred Sigala rode the gelding for trainer Ross Amestoy and owners Pierre Jean and Leslie Amestoy.
Completing the field were Scooters Debutant (Heza Motor Scooter-Phoebe Wallingford), Go Daddy Gone (Big Daddy Cartel-Taylor Can Move), Moon River (First Moonflash-A Medley Of Chicks), Kendall James (Jesse James Jr-Alice K White), Aries Rising (Sixes Royal-Sign Of A Fish), Daddy Queen Cartel (Big Daddy Cartel-Woodbridge Duchess), and White Russian (Swissle Stick TB-Alice K White).

New Mexico State Fair Derby
PRINCESS JESSE
by Danny Camp
There was a track record of $1.25 million in purses offered during the closing weekend at The Downs at Albuquerque, including the $171,070 New Mexico State Fair Derby that was run on Sept. 25.
Princess Jesse was the fastest qualifier in the Sept. 11 trials and she didn’t disappoint in the finals. The filly stepped away from the 4-gate on top and with jockey Alfredo Sigala aboard. They continued to increase
their lead, crossing the line
1 1/4-length in front and stopped the clock at :19.624 for the 400-yard event, earn- ing a 90 speed index and a wire-to-wire win.
Princess Jesse has won her last 4 out of 5 and has a total bankroll of $246,535 with the $85,535 winner’s share.
Princess Jesse is owned, trained and bred by Vance Mikkelson in New Mexico.
The filly is out of multiple stakes-placed win- ner Total Miracle. She has produced 100% money earners from six starters, including multiple stakes-placed Kaydns Krusader. Princess Jesse is her top earner and first stakes winner, also winning this year’s Zia Handicap-RG2 and Sunburst Stakes-RG3.
According to Mikkelson, “She had a small gate problem that we overcame and she
was golden in the trials. In the finals, it was a repeat performance. She is kind
of a leave me alone kind of filly, but she’s good to gallop and runs her heart out in the afternoon.”
When asked about the future, Vance stated, “We are gonna give her a little time and evaluate her sound- ness and mental state. Most likely we are looking at the Hobbs Derby (at Zia Park).
We have a great team and that’s what makes things happen.”
Carson City Girl (Woodbridge-Racetrack Barbie TB) finished second under Ricky Ramirez for owners by David E. Barrett and Sandra K. Barrett and trainer Fred Danley.
JJ Jessies Girl (Jess A Chicks-Sugar Bee Banks) finished third under Jose Enriquez for owner Pedro Carrillo and trainer Adam Tapia.
Sweet Splenda (Send Me Cartel-Apollo’s Lady TB), Chickaloni (Jess A Chicks-Machi Moon), First Note Medley (First Moonflash-A Medley Of Chicks), First Moon Fire (First Moonflash-Walkin Thru Fire), Jameson
Jr (Jesse James Jr-Tangled Vines), Wahoo Raider (Jess A Chicks-Eye Leaving) Luvthem Blazinchicks (Chicks A Blazin-Love At First Glance) completed the order of finish.
