Trainer Judd Kearl had never run a horse
in the All American Derby-G1 before 2016, though he had run one horse in the All American Futurity-G1, finishing third with Wagon Tales in 2013. This year he did even better. He qualified four to the Sept. 4 Derby, winning it with Enrique Carrion’s EC Jet One and also running third, fourth, and sixth.
When the gate opened for the Derby final, Kearl found himself with mixed emotions.
“I was trying to watch four of them, and the two fillies wiped each other out,” he said. “The two colts got away good, but it was a mess early.”

EC Jet One, breaking from post nine, raced
in seventh early under jockey Esgar Ramirez.
“I saw the big horse
on the outside was start-
ing to motor, so I was
just hoping he would get there,” Kearl said.
The big horse, favored EC Jet One, did in fact get there. He overhauled several rivals, getting to the lead in the final strides. He motored so fast that his final winning margin was 1/2-length, and he completed the 440 yards in :21.490.
Ramirez had a fantastic weekend, returning the following day to capture the All American Futurity aboard Imperial Eagle. The jockey, who qualified 3 to the Derby and selected EC Jet One to ride in the final, had plenty of praise for his Derby colt.
“He got in the gate and stood there waiting for the gate to open,” Ramirez said. “He broke really sharp. He was strong every single jump. Four-forty, you know, is a mental thing. You have to wait for the final kick. I know this horse
has a final kick, so I knew he was going to be stronger finishing than at the start.”
Carrion brought nearly his entire fam-
ily to Ruidoso Downs for the All American Derby. He has had many good horses in the past, including multiple stakes winner Azoom, but he was especially pleased with this victory because he bred the well-tempered colt himself.
“He’s great to be around—you’d never know he was a colt,” said Kearl. “In fact, the owner’s daughter, Alejandra, has hundreds of
