Revelación Classic
CARTEL SIXES
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
May 14, 2023, will be unforgettable for the Rancho Las Gaviotas team, since for the first time they won two classics in one day
at the Hipodromo de las Américas Racetrack: first the AMCCCCM Classic in race four with From Arizona, and later the Revelación Classic in race ten with Cartel Sixes.
With conditions for Quarter Horse horses of three years and older that have never won an additional race, this race had eight participants enter. Owners paid $33,000 pesos ($1,835 U.S. approx.), which made up a large part of the purse, which amounted to $337,600 pesos ($18,768 U.S. approx.) for the 350-yard race.
Although the entrants were not former stakes winners, several of them have placed before, including Cartel Sixes, KVN Diva,
Big Eagle Gone, Daringutokissme and Player X Three. Favorite in the betting were the two entries of stable Cuadra Los Gavilanes in Sheza Country Doc and My Sweety Pie, a rookie at the Hipodromo de las Américas.
When the race began, My Sweety Pie (#1A) made contact with KVN Diva (#3), who lagged behind with no room to advance, so her rider directed her to the right in search of space.
The rest of the group advanced decisively toward the finish, immediately highlighting the heavy hitter Cartel Sixes (#2) who took the lead under the direction of Alejandro Gómez Díaz reaching the finish line first by 1/2-length
over Big Eagle Gone (#4), who made a remarkable effort in the final yards demonstrating his ability to run longer distances.
The race was resolved in
:17.27 for a speed index of 88. This was the second outing for Cartel Sixes at the Hipodromo de
las Américas; he previously participated in the Velocidad Classic where he finished in fourth place. The nine-year-old bay gelding has had an interesting career at Los Alamitos, since in 2016 he ran the finals of the main Grade 1 futurities in the Ed Burke Million Futurity, Golden State Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. The following year he was also a finalist in the Golden State Derby and Southern California Derby, both Grade 2.
He later went on to compete in paired races, first in the United States and then on tracks in northern Mexico. “When I bought him, the horse had been inactive for two years, and he was in poor condition after having gone through difficulties I don’t know the details of. But I really liked him, I saw his trajectory, and in December 2022 I gave him to myself as a birthday present. At Rancho Las Gaviotas we set about the task of recuperating him and when he raced in the Velocidad Classic in March he had barely two months of preparation,” stated owner and trainer Alfredo Rabanal Salinas in an interview conducted by
Elliot León for Horses MX Magazine.
The horse and rider were welcomed to the winner’s circle by members of the
Rabanal Cárdenas Family and the Rancho Las Gaviotas team, who received recognition from Adriana Gómez Barnola, Manager of the AMCCCCM, and José Mauricio Dorantes, Manager of Operations of the Hipodromo de las Américas.
Alfredo Rabanal and his wife Gabriela Cárdenas recognized the support received from the team that has worked for a long time and that today made it possible to win both the Revelation Classic and the AMCCCCM. “The results have been slow, but with the dedication and love we put into our work, I think they will continue to happen,” Alfredo concluded in the interview.
Cartel Sixes was bred in the United States by Johnny Trotter. He is a son of Corona Cartel and out of Eye For The Sixes by Mr Eye Opene). For this win he added $168,800 pesos ($9,384 U.S. approx.) to his earnings. His record now stands at 4-3-2 from 16 races.
Well ridden by Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, Big Eagle Gone (One Famous Eagle-And Poof Shes Gone) finished in second place. Like the winner, this horse has a good track record at racetracks in the United States, this being his first race at the Hipodromo de las Américas. He is owned by Cuadra La Diamantina where he is trained by Alejandro Gutiérrez López.
The gray dapple mare Daringutokissme (Kiss My Hocks-Daring Difference) captured third place under the guidance of José Manuel Cisneros. She is the property of Cuadra Valeria and was saddled by Saúl Pérez Robredo.
Also participating: The Louisianan Gamer (The Louisiana Cartel-Adore The Game), My Sweety Pie (Big Daddy Cartel-Siete Menudos), Player X Three (Mr Jess Perry-Mischievous Player), Sheza Country Doc (Docs Best Card-Chase This Chick), and KVN Diva (KVN Corona-Favored).
