As a 6 year old in 2019, Lafishingonabugsmoon accomplished something no horse had ever before done at the Hipodromo de las Americas in Mexico. Within three months, he set New Track Records at 300 yards, 350 yards, and 440 yards.
Those exploits were part of six consecutive victories for the year, which earned him the title of Mexican Champion. He started a total of 10 times in 2019, with six wins and two seconds.
Ramiro Gonzalez Ozuna bred Lafishingonabugsmoon, who was foaled at his ranch in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Ozuna races Lafishingonabugsmoon in the name of Cuadra Los Gavilanes. Ruben Romo Garcia trains the gelding.
Lafishingonabugsmoon is by Nofishinonafullmoon, bred by Vessels Stallion Farm in California. He is out of the winning My Mr Special Bug mare A Special Ladybug, bred by Sylvia Binford in Texas.
After two victories in May, Lafishingonabugsmoon lined up for the June 16 Javier Rosique Palavicini Stakes. It was the first of his track records, as he completed the 300 yards in :14.83.
Just two weeks later on June 30, he competed in the 350-yard Anselmo Aguilar Payan, winning again. He set a New Track Record of :16.84, but the mark lasted only a half-hour, when 2-year- old Maybellina eclipsed it. Before the year was out, Lafishingonabugsmoon would be able to reclaim that record.
But first he set yet another record, this time for 440 yards, in the Aug. 18 Bank of America Mexico Championship Challenge. In winning the race as the only Mexican-bred in the field, he completed the distance in :20.87.
Lafishingonabugsmoon set his final record in the Sept. 15 Clasico Salvador Onate Ascencio Stakes, traveling 350 yards in :16.79.
“We plan to run the horse again, but it won’t be until the end of April (2020), once he recovers from an injury,” Ramiro Gonzalez Ozuna explained when asked if the gelding would return to the track.
Popular with the crowds at Hipodromo de las Americas, Lafishingonabugsmoon earned the nickname of El Rompe Records (The Record Breaker).
