The photo on page 203 shows World Champion/8-time Champion and Hall of Fame Horse Charger Bar with her breeder/trainer Wayne Charlton.
Charger Bar would earn $495,437 in her career, winning 28 of 43 starts and 21 stakes events. Some of her stakes victories included the Champion of Champions, Los Alamitos Derby, Go Man Go Handicap (twice), Shue Fly Stakes (twice), Chicado V Handicap (3-times), and the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship (twice).
Charger Bar was the undefeated World Champion in 1971 with seven consecutive wins from as many starts. She received Champion titles from 1971-1974 and was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2001. No horse has ever won more stakes races at Los Alamitos than Charger Bar, who scored 18 at the California track..
Charger Bar was sired by multiple Champion sire/multiple stakes winner Tiny Charger and out of stakes winner/2-time New Track Record setter La Ree Bar, by Rocket Bar TB.
Wayne Charlton bred and originally owner of the filly. As a three year old, Charlton sold her to Dr. Ed Allred and Kenneth Wright, while continuing to train her throughout her career.
Charger Bar became one of the top broodmares of her day, producing 12 starters from 14 foals with 10 winners/ROM, including three stakes winners and two stakes placers. Her top earner is Blushing By, who won five stakes races at Los Alamitos.
Charger Bar passed away on Nov. 6, 1997, at the age of 29 and her ashes were scattered over the infield at Los Alamitos. In 2001, the first Charger Bar Handicap was run, named in honor of the Los Alamitos legend.
This year’s $100,000 Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap was run on Jan. 8 and was won by Jess Good Reason.
