“1-2-3 meant “I love you” . . . and, Walt never left the house without tooting the car horn three times.”
American Derby-G1 in 2011. His wins included the All American Juvenile Stakes, Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1, Rainbow Derby-G1, Texas Classic Derby-G1, Leo Stakes-G1, Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1, Go Man Go Handicap-G1, and Remington Championship Challenge-G2. His record stands at 27-13-2-3, with $1,409,781 in earnings.
Hot Cash 123 also produced the 2010 colt Buster 123, by Corona For Me, who ran third in his Texas Classic Futurity trial and won his Heritage Place Derby trial, then finished ninth in the Grade 2 finals. Buster 123’s record stands at 7-2-2- 2 with $30,425 won over three seasons.
“Hot Cash 123 is probably the best horse on the ranch because she’s produced two World Champions — one a Paint and one a Quarter Horse,” says Carolyn. “I don’t know how many other mares have done that.”
CAREFULLY CONSIDERED BREEDINGS
Among notable Carolyn Bay- and T. Bill Stables-bred horses are:
• Friday 123, 1999 gelding, (Rare Form-Love Ya Lucy, Last
Hurrah) — G1-placed and the only foal for which Walt chose the stallion. He won his Dash For Cash Derby trial in 2002 and holds a 36-7-10-5 record with earnings of $141,915.
• Barbs Beduino 123 — 2001 mare, (Chicks Beduino-If One Can Dream, Dash For Perks). Named for Barbara Conley, who chose the mare as her favorite of that year’s T. Bill Stables foal crop. The mare produced Mr Ease 123, Shadaisy 123, and Tresor 123.
• Fanci Ending 123 — 2002 mare, (Dashing Cleat-Tiny Lou Etta, Tiny’s Gay), a graded stakes winner who was ranked 11th by wins in 2005.
• Very Dashin 123 — 2004 mare, (Dash Thru Traffic- Very Striking, Striking Bunny). Won the Texas Distaff Challenge-G3.
• Shadaisy 123 — 2006 mare, (Shazoom-Barbs Beduino 123, Chicks Beduino). Graded stakes placed with a third in the Texas Derby Challenge-G3 as well as a win in the Blue Bonnet Stakes.
• Mr Ease 123 — 2009 gelding, (Holland Ease-Barbs Beduino 123, Chicks Beduino). Tenth fastest qualifier to the All American Futurity in 2011.
• Country Boy 123 — 2013 gelding, (Country Chicks Man- Very Dashin 123, Dash Thru Traffic). A multiple stakes winner owned by Ruth Barbour DVM. He became Ontario, Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2016. The Hi-Point 3 Year Old and Hi- Point 3-Year-Old Gelding won five of seven races in 2016, including the Ajax Maiden Challenge Trial and Final, the Ajax Derby Challenge, and the Picov Derby Trial and Final.
“Carolyn takes a lot of time and puts a lot of thought into her breeding decisions,” says Tim Williams. “She’s a very, very, very good horseman and she never went with stallions for the sake of popularity, but instead for what her mares needed.
I was always impressed with that. Sometimes, it almost seemed like she was pulling things off the wall. For Cold
Cash 123’s sire, she chose Oak Tree Special. She didn’t
do it to save money; she did it to complement the dam.”
