QUALIFIERS TO THE GRADE 1, $3,000,000

For the third consecutive year, the lure of a $1.5 million paycheck to the winner resulted in enough trials to fill two racing cards at Ruidoso Downs, which hosted the trials for the Grade 1 All American Futurity on August 19-20. Fifteen races were on tap each day, 30 total, with the horses having the top five times from each day advancing to the Labor Day finale. The All American Futurity offers the largest purse of any 2-year-old race in the world, regardless of breed.
Trainer Toby Keeton and jockey Esgar Ramirez fared well on the first day of trials, teaming up to qualify two horses for the finals. Ramirez added another win and quali- fying effort aboard the Tony Sedillo-trainee Imperial Eagle, making him the rider on three of the day’s five qualifiers. No other jockey rode more one qualifier, and no trainer other than Keeton qualified more than one horse. Also, no owner qualified more than one horse.
It was a different story in the sire ranks, where One Famous Eagle dominated the first day with three quali- fiers. He was represented by one additional qualifier on the second day, bringing his total to four qualifiers.
Some of the top-ranked 2 year olds in the nation failed to advance, leaving room for some up-and-coming talent to go postward in the finals. Four out of the five top-ranked 2 year olds were entered in the trials, and only one – Apolltical Chad – made the finals.
