Mamacita Cartel, a homebred 4-year-
old daughter of Big Daddy Cartel owned by David Bloomer of Bosque, New Mexico, was a prompt 8-5 favorite in the Dec. 2, 400-yard New Mexico Filly & Mare Quarter Horse Championship (RG1) at Zia Park.
Ridden by Edgar Martinez, Mamacita Cartel defeated First N Forever by a clear
1 1/4-lengths in :19.734 against a reported 28-mph head wind. Cynthia Gonzalez prepped the bay mare, who banked the $87,000 win- ner’s share of the $145,000 purse.
Mamacita Cartel was shortening in distance off of her second-place finish, 1 1/2-lengths
behind winner Major Bites, in the 440-yard, $170,000 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on Nov. 4. The mare’s sire, Big Daddy Cartel, is a winning 9-year- old son of the Holland Ease stallion Corona Cartel.
Racing at Ruidoso Downs in 2011, Big Daddy Cartel earned $121,800 from five outs, and he was a finalist in that season’s All American (G1) and Rainbow (G1) futurities. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $4.3 million from three crops, topped by multiple graded stakes winner and 2017 All American Futurity runner-up Big Daddy, graded stakes winner Daddys Blushing, and
multiple stakes winner Cartels Star Daddy. Big Daddy Cartel is a half-brother to stakes winner Racy La Jolla. The stallion is owned by
and stands for a $5,000 fee at Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico.
Mamacita Cartel is one of four winners from five starters foaled by Posies Woodette, a home- bred 11-year-old daughter of the Dash Ta Fame stallion Woodbridge who won the 2010 New Mexico Breeders’ Championship (RG2) and was a finalist in the ‘’09 New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3), both at Albuquerque Downs. Mamacita Cartel is a half-sister to ’16 Zia Derby (RG2) finalist Jess Beer Money.
Mamacita Cartel’s second dam, the win- ning Calyx mare Posies, ran third in the 1991 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (G2) at Los Alamitos.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Mamacita Cartel has won six of 16 starts, and her three wins in six outs at the 400-yard distance include a neck victory in the May 25, $39,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (R) at SunRay Park. The mare has earned $247,897, of which $217,780 has been pocketed from eight races this year.
Big Sierra Cartel finished third, 1 1/2-lengths behind Mamacita Cartel, and was followed by Hollywoodcrown, Princess
Jessie Jane, Ginuwine Buzz, Msferrari Edition, Hardtookiss, Jessa Diva, and Two Wines.
Runner-up First N Forever is a 3-year-old daughter of champion First Moonflash owned by Robert Elliott and Billy L. Smith. The filly has won one of 10 starts and has earned $97,115, and her record includes a third-place run, 1 1/4-lengths behind winner Bigg Daddy, in the 400-yard, $191,000 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.
A gray sophomore daughter of Big Daddy Cartel campaigned by Esteban Sanchez and David Javier Sierra, Big Sierra Cartel has won three of nine outs, and the $14,500 third-place share of the New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship purse pushed the filly’s earnings to $79,059.
