Anselmo Aguilar Payán Classic: Subasta Selecta Futurity–RG2
TEXANA CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The trials for this traditional futurity were held on Aug. 21 and 22. For the event, 163 foals were registered, of which 15 were removed for different reasons, and another three threw their riders so their participation was cancelled.
In this way, only 145 horses participated
in 20 trials, of which the 10 finalists were obtained as well as those with the right to dispute the consolation prize. All of them were registered to the book of the 2020 Annual Select Yearling Auction, an event that was can- celed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the nomination and registration
fees paid by the owners, the total purse was $8,060,000 pesos (approximately $401,360 US), of which $6,066,875 pesos ($302,110 US approximately) was to reward the owners of the finalists according to their order of finish in the 350 yard event.
The Cuadras Bronco Rider, Los Gavilanes and Rancho San Pedro PZH entered two run- ners each, one being BR Chivali Champ as the fastest qualifier from race four of the second
day of trials with :16.908 as the only horse that broke the barrier of :17.00 for the 350 yards, so he received wide preference in the betting win- dows. It is worth mentioning
that the waterlogged track conditions during the first day of trials was decisive for the performance of the partic- ipants, compared to those of the second day.
The race was contested between nine finalists, due to the retirement of the colt Merry Pop Pop from Rancho San Pedro PZH.
In the main event, BR
Ficha drifted inward and
impacted his teammate BR
Chivali Champ, which affected the perfor- mance of both. The group began their quick run to the finish line, led by AG Navigating Steph, accompanied by JE Megatron on his left, and on his right by Texana Cartel. This one had enough space to make a great race and
a spectacular close to win by a head over AG Navigating Steph, with AG Franky Dreams in third place by neck difference.
Texana Cartel (Danny Cartel–La Texana Tree, by Oak Tree Special) covered
the distance in :17.06, for a speed index of 97, under the direction of Paul Osvaldo Rodriguez who also rode the filly in the qualifying races
in which she recorded :17.17 as the fourth best qualifying time. Previously, this pair won the finals of the Garañones Futurity on July 11 (reported in Speedhorse, August 2021).
The record of the sor- rel filly is now 4-2-0 in 6 starts, adding to
her account $2,548,088 pesos ($126,886
U.S. approx.) taking her total earnings to $4,395,638 pesos, she being the horse with the highest earnings in the current season at the Hipodromo de las Americas.
