Dear Breeders,
Unless you’ve been living under a rock,
you’re aware of the issues facing our industry from our critics. Some of the criticism is jus- tified, much is not, and it’s not going away anytime soon.
Regardless of the merits of the attacks we face, we must realize that our critics have a very loud voice and are well funded.
Dog racing is just about done, Sea World was severely damaged, and the Ringling Brothers Circus is but a memory.
As Pat Cummings from the Thorough- bred Idea Foundation aptly said recently,
“Horse Racing, no matter the breed, is judged by its worst behavior, not its best.”
Outsiders don’t realize how much we care about the horses in our trust, and frankly, we probably don’t do a perfect job telling our side of the story. We’re busy doing what we do, day in and day out, doing the best we possibly can to care for our horses.
But maybe we need to start because no one is going to do it for us.
I’ve attached an article that was printed earlier this year in “This Is Horse Racing” by Joe Clancy. Joe remembered our horse when he was competing and was surprised and pleased to learn that the old boy was still with us.
It’s a neat story, but it’s not unique to
this horse or us. I want to ask the breeders
to share their stories of horses that are in retirement, maybe found a second career, etc. We’ll help to spread the word of the good things we do and perhaps blunt some of the criticism facing us. Send your experiences to the office.
Sincerely,
Tom Goncharoff, President
