ANNIVERSARY
This is Moreno’s third riding title in Alberta. He previously won in 2015 and 2016. Bad luck of a broken arm prevented the 2017 award.
“Thank you for the great boss/ teacher/trainer, who has helped
me accomplish things, William Leech,” said Ricky Moreno. “Thank you for the amazing horses and those owners who brought them to run. A big thank you to my uncle Armando Andrade. Without him teaching me how to ride, I wouldn’t be the jockey I am today. And most of all, thank God.”
Ricky plans to be back in the irons in 2019 in Alberta to defend his title.
This year’s Champion Jockey award was bestowed upon young Ricardo Moreno, a native of Mexico. He piloted 69 mounts
to 28 victories with earnings of
over $181,000 CND. Some of
the horses that highlighted his success in 2018 were Stripsteak (Canada QH Cup Derby winner), True Copy (All Canadian Derby winner), Toughie (Edmonton Bonus Challenge winner), Gone To Be Bright (Alberta Bred Derby runner up), Poutn And Zoomin (Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity Winner), and Free Thought (Century Downs 770, 12 in a row winner).
