WCRA Half A Million Dollar Rodeo Returns To Lazy E
The World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) announced that Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, will host the WRCA’s five-day $500,000 Semi-Finals on May 15-19. The events will consist of bareback riding, women’s breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull- riding. Eight athletes from each discipline will advance to the Titletown Stampede on June 1. Prior to the progressive and final rounds, WCRA will also host a barrel race jackpot on May 15. 2019 Extreme Mustang Makeover
The Extreme Mustang Makeover (EMM) involves a 100-day competition that chal- lenges trainers to gentle and saddle train wild mustangs. Trainers will display their horses in a series of classes and a Top 10 finals competition. After the competition, spectators may adopt or purchase one as their own. The four EMM events for 2019 are: May 10-11 in Ocala, Florida; Jun. 20-22 in Lexington, Kentucky; Aug. 9-10 in Los Angeles, California and Sept. 5-7 in Fort Worth, Texas. AAVMC Names Recipient of 2019 Billy E. Hooper Award
The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) has named
Dr. Elizabeth Strand as the recipient of the 2019 AAVMC Billy E. Hooper Award for Distinguished Service. The award is given to an individual whose leadership and vision has made a significant contribution to academic veterinary medicine and the profession. She
is an associate professor in the University of Tennessee’s Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences. Elizabeth founded the UT Veterinary Social Work (VSW) program, which is the first of its kind to define veteri- nary social work as a sub-specialty, based on both scholarly literature and first-hand experi- ence of the human needs that exist in animal- related settings. Dr. Strand was honored at
the 2019 Annual Conference and Iverson Bell Symposium on Mar. 8-10 in Washington, D.C.
Texas Father-Son Team Plead Guilty in Horse Racing Front
Raul Beltran Jr. and his son Edward Beltran pled guilty to a federal count of possession of
a controlled substance with intent to sell. The pair used horse racing to cover the thousands of kilograms of marijuana they trafficked as well as the proceeds they laundered. Twenty- two people, including a former Starr County Deputy, have been convicted as part of the investigation. Sentencing for the Beltran’s will take place June 3.
Interscholastic Equestrian Association Announces Alliance with APHA
The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) announced that the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) has become their newest affiliate. The two organizations will cross-promote in a variety of methods and venues that will include ben- efits and discounts for members. APHA will also provide sponsorship of one award for the “Most Valuable Paint Horse” of the show at both the 2019 Hunt Seat and Western National Finals.
Les Barlow Passes Away
Longtime Idaho horseman Leslie “Les” Phillip Barlow passed away on March 7 due to kidney failure. Barlow was a successful breeder and trainer, with his horses winning top honors every year from the Idaho Quarter Horse Racing Association. In 2018, his homebred mare Sparklin Cartel was named Idaho’s Horse of the Year. Barlow is survived by his wife, Darla, daughters Brook, Britney and Brandi, along with many other family members and friends.
