AQHA Challenge Championships
Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1
A TRES OF EAGLE
by Tracy Gantz
Fred and Carolyn Helmuth’s A Tres Of Eagle won the Oct. 21 Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1 at Lone Star Park.
The only problem was that Fred didn’t get a clear look at their horse during the race.
“There were quite a few people there, and there were several people blocking me,” Fred said. “So, I was watching it on the big screen. As they got closer to the wire a guy stepped right in front of me.”
Breaking from the rail under jockey Francisco Calderon, A Tres Of Eagle reached the lead midway through the 440 yards, just in time for Fred to lose track of him.
“I was trying to pick him up, and then when I saw him cross the finish line, I said, ‘Whoa!’ He was about a length ahead. I knew he was coming on when I had my last glimpse of him.”
The official winning margin was 1/2-length, and A Tres Of Eagle completed the 440 yards in :21.665.
