THE
QUARTER HORSE/THOROUGHBRED
COMPARISON
One thing I think all Quarter Horse people can relate to is talking Quarter Horses with someone who is completely out
of the loop. When you say you are involved with racehorses, they immediately bring up the Kentucky Derby. It never fails. I used to take a minute to explain how the Kentucky Derby is Thoroughbreds and
we deal with Quarter Horses, and they are built for shorter distances. When someone brings up Churchill Downs now, I usually just say, “Yeah, I’ve never been there, but I’d like to go.” This got me thinking of
the financial comparison between Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. Historically, Thoroughbreds have been much more popular when it comes to racing. I took it upon myself to do some research on the financial differences between Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds and found it to be quite interesting.
SALES AND STUDS
One clear indicator of the differences is the average sale price of two of the most prominent yearling sales. In 2023, the Ruidoso Select
