Old South Futurity
RDD DASHIN EFFORT
by Tracy Gantz
Horses with RDD Dashin Effort’s late- running style don’t usually win 330-yard races. That made the gelding’s victory in the
May 25 Old South Futurity even more impres- sive. It also certainly bodes well for his future as the distances increase.
As he has in his first three races, RDD Dashin Effort didn’t break on top. It took him a few strides to get going, but under jockey Arturo Carrillo’s urging,
RDD Dashin Effort closed
with excellent speed. He
passed Jessacountryboy and
Chickie Kool in the late
stages and also managed to
catch leader Jet Black Legend
right at the wire to win by a
head in :16.564. Bettors had
sent him away as the favorite
at $2.40-1.
Owned by Santiago Castillo, RDD Dashin Effort debuted in March over 300
yards at Louisiana Downs. That race was a bit too short for him, and he finished fourth while closing late. He has since been a perfect three- for-three at 330 yards, breaking his maiden at Sam Houston and winning his Old South trial. Jonathan Castaneda now trains the gelding, who was the eighth-fastest qualifier.
Richard Dale Domingue bred RDD Dashin Effort in Louisiana. The gelding’s
dam, unraced Miss Native Effort, has produced two win- ners from four starters. Her other winner, RDD Dashing Effort, is a full brother to RDD Dashin Effort and earned $64,340.
Jet Black Legend (Game Patriot-First Down Hemp), the second-fastest qualifier, finished second under John Hamilton. Kenneth Roberts trains the gelding for owner Oscar Rohne. After a third
in his debut at Louisiana Downs, Jet Black Legend broke his maiden at Sam Houston Race Park and won his Old South trial.
Jose Socorro Vera Jr.’s Chickie Kool (Country Chicks Man-First Kool Baby) finished third with Luis Vivanco aboard after qualifying the fastest for the Old South Futurity. Castaneda also trains the filly, who broke her maiden in her Old South trial, her third career start.
Rounding out the field were Sheaintcrynrealtears (Jet Cartel-Tear Drop Six), Jessacountryboy (Feature Mr Jess-My Special Phoebe), Shining Tellercartel (Teller Cartel- Classic Guitar), TTT Kellys Walker (Second Down Kelly-Georgia Moonwalker), Kodiak
B (Coronas LeavingYou-Free The Bear), and Sweet N Dashing (Dash Ta Fame-Lil Sweet Minnie). Dashin Wave was scratched.

Old South Derby
TRIPLE VODKA
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Heath Taylor scored a stakes double when Triple Vodka captured the May 25 Old South Derby at Delta Downs. Just two races earlier, Taylor-trained First Klas Fred had won the Develop A Plan Stakes-G3.
Triple Vodka, breaking from the rail, was fortunate to avoid an accident in the Derby. Danielle And Daisies veered slightly into Triple Vodka when the gate opened, but soon the two were running
separately, with plenty of
room between them. Midway
through the 400-yard
race, Danielle And Daisies
stumbled and fell, unseating
jockey Alfonso Lujan. Raul
Ramirez Jr. on Triple Vodka
was clear of the incident, and
they continued on to win by
a neck from the fast-closing
favorite, Jess Fly With Me.
Taylor trains Triple Vodka for owner Renee
Spiller. She bought the colt for just $4,600
at the 2010 TQHA Yearling Sale, in part because she at one time had owned the second dam, Newport Fancy. Triple Vodka at two reeled off three victories in his first three races, including the rich TQHA Sale Futurity-RG2. Away from the races until this past March, he finished third in a trial at Sam Houston Race Park and then second in
his Old South trial, subse- quently placed first through a disqualification.
K.A. Norris and Peters Racing bred Triple Vodka from Newport Lily. With only two starters, Newport Lily has gotten Triple Vodka and current 2-year-old winner Hiclass Vodka.
Jess Fly With Me (Fly Jess Fly-The Meteorite), the fastest qualifier, ran second under jockey Santos Carrizales.
Eusevio Huitron trains the colt for owner Antonio Carrizales. Jess Fly With Me won three of his four previous starts this year.
John Jumonville Jr.’s homebred Sizzlin Cartel (Corona For Me-In His Dreams) fin- ished third with Gilbert Ortiz aboard. Trained by Kenneth Weeks, Sizzling Cartel won the 2011 Firecracker Futurity-G2 at Delta and finished second in the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity-G3 at Louisiana Downs.
Completing the field were JLs Crawfish Pie (The Crawfish-Shaken Thru Zoom), Hot Tickin (Hotdoggin-Tickin Away), Senorita Perry (Mr Jess Perry-Love A Rascal), Runaway Russo (Illegal Runaway-Princess Fancy Pants), Jetset N Lajolla (Streakin La Jolla-Gos Sudden Jet). The fallen Danielle And Daisies (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Crush On Fish) did not finish. Un Coronita Porfavor was scratched.
