AQHA Launches New Owner Website
AQHA Racing has launched a new web- based New Ownership Guide. Found at aqharacing.com/owner, it’s designed to provide a friendly and practical introduction to the in- dustry, and to let prospective owners understand what their responsibilities and rewards will be. The new website shows visitors what it means
to be the owner of a racing American Quarter Horse, including startup and extended costs, hiring and working with a trainer, purchasing a horse and more. Readers are then encouraged to download and read the more in-depth “AQHA Racing New Owner Guide,” which explores ownership in much more detail. The 35-page booklet discusses partnerships, training, veteri- nary care, insurance and many other aspects of the horse racing industry. The website and print guide also provide contact information for each AQHA state and provincial affiliate, all of which have agreed to field calls from would-be owners who are interested in joining the business.

Equine Piroplasmosis Found In Smuggled Horses
According to a May 18 statement from the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC), U.S. Border Patrol agents recently seized 10 adult horses and four yearlings as they at- tempted to enter Texas illegally by walking across the Rio Grande River south of El Paso. All 10 of the adult animals tested positive for Equine Piroplasmosis (EP).
According to the latest USDA information, Dr. Grant Wease, field veterinarian for USDA/ APHIS/VS in El Paso, indicated that, “In 2011, approximately 280 head of cattle and 160 head of equine (primarily horses) were intercepted by USDA officials along the Rio Grande.” Many of the normal import processes for livestock entering Texas have been impacted by border violence, making the attempt to smuggle ani- mals into the state even more tempting.”
The TAHC recently passed EP rules requir- ing testing of racehorses prior to entry into a Texas track. “Racing Quarter Horses with some

Dice Green & Red Peppers and Tomatoes. Chop Garlic, Onion, Jalapenos, and Cilantro. Add all into a large mixing bowl. Add Corn and Beans. Squeeze Lime and add about 3⁄4 bottle of Italian Dressing to mixture. Stir until everything is mixed together. I do not recom- mend using a food processor. I chop everything by hand. I think
it tastes better that way. Refrigerate for at least an hour. Serve with Tostitos scoops.
