horse sired by Pennant. This horse had 51 starts with 29 wins, 10 seconds and four thirds earning $338,610 and was the 1930 Co-Champion 2-Year-Old Colt; the 1932, 1933 and1934 Champion Handicap Horse, and Horse of the Year in 1933 and 1934. Equipoise was foaled in 1928 and died in 1938, again a horse with a limited breeding career. He sired just 74 named foals with 53 winners and nine stakes winners. He counts among his stakes winners Shut Out, winner of the 1942 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and fifth in the Preakness. Equipoise is out of Swinging by Broomstick by Ben Brush.
Equestrian, a son of Equipoise, is a most interesting horse because he had a very modest race record. He made eight starts, winning two and placing third in one earning $1,580. Equestrian is out of Frillette by Man O’ War. Frillette is out of Frillery by Broomstick by Ben Brush. This gives Equestrian a breeding pattern of 3x3 to Broomstick.
Equestrian became a sire for the King Ranch and, as they say, that is the rest of
the story. He sired Stymie, a claimer that became the all-time leading money winner of $918,845. He won some of the most important races, including the Whitney Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap, Pimlico Cup Handicap and Brooklyn Handicap. He was the 1945 Champion Handicap Horse. Stymie is out of Stopwatch, a mare that has a 2x4 breeding pattern to Colin by Domino.
Equestrian is also the sire of Poised, another runner that earned a modest $6,400 from eight starts with two wins, one second and one third. Poised is out of Momentum by Boojum, who is out of Elf by Chicle and Elf is out of Wendy by Peter Pan. Elf is a full sister to Chicaro. The dam of Momentum
is Stopwatch, the mare with the breeding pattern of 2x4 to Colin in Stymie’s pedigree.
Poised sired Balumba, a mare out of Baloma by Depth Charge and out of Woven Web, aka Miss Princess as she was called on Quarter Horse tracks when she was named the World Champion three times from 1946 to 1948. This is the family of Babe On The Fly, dam of eight stakes winners including Rock You, winner of the 2013 Ruidoso Derby-G1, and Little Talks, winner of the 2015 Golden State Million Futurity-G1.
The most important horse Equestrian sired for the racing Quarter Horse is Top Deck, the famous unraced King Ranch bred stallion. Top Deck, unraced due to injury, would
go from the King Ranch to Ernest Lane to
J. B. Ferguson to A. B. Green. Along the
way he sired 219 racing ROM and 25 stakes winners with earnings of $1,681,877. He is
including the Hopeful Stakes at six furlongs and the Belmont Stakes at 11 furlongs, and was named the 1907 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt based on his six stakes wins which,
in addition to the Belmont, he won the Brooklyn Derby at 12 furlongs.
Peter Pan sired 48 stakes winners from 245 foals, and this is interesting when we look at where he stood. Avalyn Hunter reported on her website American Classic Pedigrees that Peter Pan started his sire career at Castleton Stud (the home of Domino) where stallions like Ben Brush, Voter, Celt, Disguise, Sweep, Ultimus and Colin stood. He then moved to
the Whitney Stud and stood alongside Broomstick, Hamburg, Burgomeister and Whiskbroom II.
Tryster and Macaw are two of Peter
Pan’s top runners. Macaw won six stakes, including the Carter Handicap at seven furlongs. He earned $56,650. He is out
of Polly Flanders by Burgomeister, a son
of Hamburg who is out of Lady Reel, a daughter of Mannie Gray. This gives Macaw a breeding patter of 4x5 to Mannie Gray, the dam of Domino.
Tryster won over $102,000 winning
all six of his 2-year-old races including five stakes races. He won the Saratoga Special Stakes at 6.6 furlongs and was named 1920 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt. He won the 1922 Pimlico Fall Series, winning all three
divisions of this race with the #1 of the series a six furlong race, the #2 at a mile and #3 at a mile and furlong. He was the only horse to win this series in one year. He is best known to Quarter Horse breeders as the broodmare sire of Custus Rastus, who is the sire of horses that ran AAA time and earned their AQHA Championship and Superior Halter Horses, such as Custus Liz, who is the dam of multiple stakes winner Royal Doulton, who also won the Go Josie Go Stakes. Tryster had a breeding pattern of 4x5 to Mannie Gray, just as Macaw did.
When we look at the Peter Pan influence on the American Quarter Horse, we see
two branches of his line the have made a substantial contribution to our racehorses. Pennant and Black Toney are two sons that have had this influence. Pennant was foaled in 1911 and won nine of his 12 starts with stakes wins in the Futurity Stakes at two and the Philadelphia Stakes at four, both at six furlongs. Pennant was the fifth consecutive horse bred by James R. Keene to win the Futurity Stakes. We also saw Pennant as the broodmare sire of Piggin String.
Pennant was purchased as a yearling
and became a part of the Whitney breeding program. He stood alongside his sire Peter Pan, and that has shown to be a dilemma for several stallions we have looked at. He sired 247 foals with 139 winners and 39 stakes winners. Equipoise is the leading stakes
