If we didn’t have that, I’m afraid we’d drift [apart].”
Char and Jay agree. “I consider Cindy one of my best friends, along with being my sister-in-law,” Char says. While planning and setting goals for their part-
nership, the two couples strive to operate with the honesty and integrity that has come to be associated

“We also try hard to match our horses to the person who’s buying them,” Char adds. “Jay hates to see somebody sell a horse to someone who’s not suited for it.”
The partners also strive to emulate their parents’ success. “We’re actually trying very hard to even play like they did,” Cindy says of her parents. “They really did remarkably well.”
                        Today’s Direction
                   Yearling by Parson’s Rock
This yearling is from the first crop sired by their stallion Parsons Rock.
“Every horse we’ve sent to the track with few exceptions has been raised here and trained by Jay,” Char says. “He’s not a race trainer, but by the time the horses get to the track, Jay has put a handle on them so they can go in a different direction. Then, if they don’t work out [as runners], he continues to ride them and guide them toward what he feels they’ll excel at.
“Our whole purpose is to breed horses that can run, but also become using horses,” Char adds. “So, we’re going toward breeding to good barrel mares,
race mares and performance mares. We always race everything with the idea that they could be put back into the program as something else.
“Brian ropes, and he and Cindy are more into the cattle,” Char continues, “so they tend more toward
a horse that could be used like that. So, we want
to raise a horse that has a short pastern, and a lot
of bone — a good, solid horse. We’ve used a lot of Thoroughbreds for size, but they’ve still got to have that sturdy foundation.”
