                 Enchantress Stakes (R)
Chary Ride broke her maiden in the February 16, $100,000 Enchantress Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.
Trained by Jose Gonzalez, Jr. for owners Gallegos del Norte Racing and Nate Roybal, Chary Ride crossed the wire a neck behind Shugs Charlie, but the filly was moved up to first following the disqualification of Shugs Charlie from first to second. Jimmy Coates rode the homebred dark bay or brown daughter of Excessive Passion.
Chary Ride is one of four winners from eight starters sired by Excessive Passion, a Grade 3-placed son of the Danzig stallion Vronsky who won three stakes from 2009-12, including the 2010 Harry Henson Stakes at Hollywood Park. A 2007 California-bred foal, Excessive Passion has sired the earners of more than $205,000 from five crops.
Excessive Passion is owned by Gallegos del Norte Racing and stands at Gallegos del Norte Ranch in Albuquerque.
Chary Ride is also one of four winners
from six starters foaled by Chary, who won the $75,000 Calder Oaks at Calder Racecourse near Miami, Florida, in ’09. The filly is a half-sister to Walker Stalker, the winner of last year’s Duke City Sprint Stakes at Albuquerque Downs.
Chary Ride’s second dam, the Boundary mare Lady Discreet, produced seven winners from eight starters, including Courtesan, a half-sister to Chary who won two stakes in Florida from 2013- 15, including the $100,000 Juvenile Filly Turf Stakes (R) at Gulfstream Park in 2013.
Chary Ride’s third dam, the Private Account mare Pretty Discreet, won the 1995 Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. A Kentucky- bred ’92 foal, Pretty Discreet foaled three stakes winners, all of whom were half-brothers to Lady Discreet, including Discreet Cat, the winner of the 2006 Hill ’N Dale Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct, and Discreetly Mine, the winner of the ’10 King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.
Chary Ride was coming off of a third- place finish in a 1-mile maiden special weight route at Sunland Park on February 2. The filly has won one of nine starts, and the $60,000 winner’s share of the Enchantress Stakes purse increased her bankroll to $100,739.
Sent to post at odds of 30-1, Chary Ride returned a $63.40 win mutuel and paired with Shugs Charlie, a 17-1 longshot, for a $1,117.40 ($2) exacta. Two Stepper, the 2-1 favorite in the field of 10, ran third, 2 1/4 lengths behind the winner, to complete a $1 trifecta payoff of $3,626.
Latenite Slewzy, Delightful Hips, Abbie’s Way, Count Them Again, Nobody Knows Who, Citron Attila, and Tight Fittin Jeans.
Shugs Charlie is a bay daughter of Shame On Charlie owned by Humberto Munoz and Karla J. Munoz. The filly has won one of three starts, and the $20,000 runner-up share of the Enchantress Stakes purse pushed her earnings to $35,128.
Two Stepper races for R.D. Hubbard and Paul Blanchard. A homebred bay Attila’s Storm filly, Two Stepper has banked $119,510 from eight starts, and her three wins include a 1 1/4-length score in the 6-furlong, $100,000 La Senora Stakes (R) at Sunland Park on January 18.
