Los Al Adds New Stakes For Intermountain & Northwest Horses
Los Alamitos Race Course has added two new stakes races geared toward Intermountain and Northwest Quarter Horses. Already on the schedule were the Wild West Futurity (trials Oct. 7, finals Oct. 20), Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap (Oct. 5) and Kip Didericksen Handicap (Oct. 5), events restricted to Quarter Horses based in the Intermountain and Northwest regions. Horses from these regions will now have the opportunity to run in two new restricted $16,000 overnight stakes races: a 350-yard stakes to be held Sept. 16, and a 400-yard stakes to be held Oct. 27.
Teller Sweet Nothins (#9) wins the Heartland Futurity.
RCI Considers “One Strike, You’re Out” Proposal
According to a release by the Association
of Racing Commissioners International (RCI), the RCI Board of Directors has voted to develop a “One Strike, You’re Out” proposal for trainers and owners found responsible for administering or facilitating the administration of endangering substances in their horses. In addition to license revocation, complaints would be filed with law enforcement for possible animal cruelty charges. RCI plans
to compile a list of substances that would warrant these penalties. Currently, RCI Model Rules recommend a first-time penalty of a 1-3 year suspension and a $10,000-$25,000 fine for the worst violations. A license revocation recommendation does not apply until the second offense.
