The first yearling sale of the year can set the tone for the rest of the sale season, so optimism is likely high after a strong showing by the TQHA Yearling Sale on July 27-28 in San Antonio, Texas.
“All things considered, we were very pleased with the sale,” said TQHA Race Director Rob Werstler. “We had good crowds both days
and probably the biggest Thursday crowd ever for our yearling preview barbecue. I think Louisiana, Ruidoso and Heritage Place can all expect to see good results.”
Last year, the TQHA Yearling Sale cata- logued 262 horses. This year, 352 horses were catalogued, marking an increase of 34.35 percent. It is a good sign for the Quarter Horse industry, bucking the predictions of smaller foal crops and fewer consignments due to a weakened economy.
With more horses up for sale, the TQHA Sale saw an increase in gross revenue from $2,711,050 to $2,966,200, including repur- chases. The average including repurchases dropped only slightly, from $9,636 to $8,854, a decrease of 8.12 percent. This year’s average excluding repurchases was $9,069.
“Anytime you sell more horses you can expect a drop in average. It was minimal and the consignors I spoke to were happy with the way their horses sold,” Werstler added.
First Down Dash was the leading sire
by average price, with two horses averaging $86,000. Valiant Hero was represented by one yearling for $67,000, while Mr Jess Perry’s six yearlings averaged $37,000.
Both of First Down Dash’s yearlings topped the sales results, with Viva Sin Tacha, a colt out of Miss Sin Tacha, topping the sale at $92,000, and Daytona B, a colt out of Dashing Pana, bringing the second-highest bid of $80,000. Todd Antonuk, agent for Bob and Jerry Gaston, consigned Viva Sin Tacha, which was purchased by Rick Crosby. Bielau Oaks consigned Daytona B, which was purchased by Judd Kearl, agent.
Mr Jess Perry was the leading sire by gross sales, with six yearlings bringing a total of $222,000. Tres Seis had 13 yearlings sell for a total of $176,500, while First Down Dash had two yearlings sell for $172,000. (All leading sire stats exclude repurchases.)
Mr Jess Perry was also the leading brood- mare sire by gross sales, with $244,300 in total sales on 17 yearlings. First Down Dash was second, with $232,200 on 11 yearlings, while Royal Quick Dash was the third leading broodmare sire by gross sales, with nine head bringing $121,200.
