 SALES
After seeing a sharp increase in average
last year, the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling Sale held steady this year. Preliminary results show a slight increase during the sale held Aug. 3-4 at the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, Louisiana.
The 2011 LQHBA Sale sold fewer horses than years past, and buyers responses with a noteworthy 23% increase in the overall average, excluding repurchases, to $8,241. The catalog last year featured 451 horses; this year’s catalog jumped to 505 horses, with 38 withdrawn and a total of 467 horses going through the auction ring. With a similar number of offerings, the average rose slightly from $8,241 to $8,871, an increase of 7.6%. The median price excluding repurchases was $5,700.
“We had a good sale,” said LQHBA Executive Director Leverne Perry. “People
buy yearlings to run in futurities, and we have the best 2-year-old program in America. Our Laddie and Lassie futurities were both worth around a quarter of a million dollars this year. The Lee Berwick was over a half-million. The LQHBA Breeders Futurity is going to be a mil- lion dollars this year. The money is here, and it’s restricted to Louisiana breds. That is the key to our sales.”
The highest seller at the LQHBA Yearling Sale was Hip#433, Im Jess Blue, a colt sired
by Jess Louisiana Blue. Tate Farms, Agent
for Montgomery Equine Center, consigned
the colt, who was purchased for $56,000 by Kimberly and Herman Hogue. Im Jess Blue is a half-brother to two 2012 2-year-olds—Grade 3 stakes-placed Surf N Turf Dude and Grade 2 qualifier Open Me A Corona. His dam, In The Open, is a half-sister to stakes winner Ocean Cartel and Special Ela. Im Jess Blue’s third dam is the outstanding producing Thorough- bred mare In The Curl, who also produced Broodmare Of The Year Runaway Wave (dam of Champions Wave Carver and Ocean Run- away) and stakes winner Harbor Beach.
Weetona Stanley consigned the second highest-seller, Hip #110, Fast Black Prize, a colt by Jet Black Patriot out of Fast Prize Corona. TM Ranch paid $49,000 for the colt who traces to Stanley’s blue-hen mare First Prize Dash, a full sister to First Down Dash. Fast Black Prize is out of the winning mare Fast Prize Corona,
a half-sister to stakes winner and world record setter Fast Prize Zoom, and the stakes-placed winners Fast Prize Doll (dam of stakes-placed Fast Prize Doll Too) and Fast Prize Tracy.
The leading sire by total sales and average was Game Patriot, who had 31 yearlings sell for a total of $543,600 and an average of $17,535. Heza Fast Dash was second-leading sire by total sales, with 34 head bringing $389,600, while Jet Black Patriot was third with 33 year- lings grossing $356,000. Coronas Leaving You
was the second-leading sire by average, with 15 yearlings averaging $16,713, while Jess Louisi- ana Blue’s 11 head averaged $16,555, making him the third-leading sire by average.
Mr Jess Perry was the leading broodmare sire by total sales, with 32 yearlings bringing $461,700. Streakin La Jolla was second, with 29 head bringing $296,300, while Mr Eye Opener was third with seven head selling for $146,000. Splash Bac was the leading brood- mare sire by average (with more than one year- ling), with two yearlings averaging $32,000. Mr Eye Opener was second with seven head
Dutch Jumonville, Katie Dickens & Kent Bouillion
Donald Aymond & Steve Williams
averaging $20,857, while Stoli was the third- leading broodmare sire by average with three head averaging $20,667.
The LQHBA also generates revenue for the association’s youth scholarship fund during
the auction. All of the vendor fees are directly deposited in the scholarship fund. After the sale this year, the live ferns used to decorate
the sales arena were auctioned off, with that money also helping to build the LQHBA youth scholarship fund.
