Around 380 horses linked to the drug cartel remain at Zule Farms in Lexingon, Oklahoma. According to an article pub- lished online by The Oklahoman, the federal government took direct control of 49 of the most valuable horses in June, and the son of ranch owners Jose Trevino Morales and wife Zulema Trevino was left in charge of the ranch. Eleven of the horses at Zule Farms have since died and others have become
sick and injured due to heat and overcrowd- ing. A Texas judge agreed to let the federal government sell all of the remaining horses to prevent further loss.
Black Gold 300 Futurity Purse Money Distributed
According to the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, the $95,000 purse from the Black Gold 300 Futurity has been distrib- uted after the race was declared a no contest. The race was to be run June 30 at Fair Mead- ows, but a mechanical failure of the starting gate caused the field to be dispatched at ran- dom intervals, and the event was declared a no contest. Track stewards, based on Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission rules, ordered the purse be distributed as follows: three scratched horses received last place money of $1,900 each, and the remaining seven participants each received $12,757.15, an equal portion of the remaining purse.

In conjunction with this purse increase, Los Alamitos decreased by $500 purses for 3-year- old and older Quarter Horses racing at 300 yards and less. “It’s important to note that in no case will any overnight Quarter Horse purse for 3-year-olds and upward at Los Alamitos be under $5,000,” Church added.

U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks has scheduled an Oct. 22 trial for eight suspects arrested in a case involving an Oklahoma horse ranch and the alleged use of Quarter Horses
to launder money for Mexico’s Zetas drug cartel. Federal prosecutors have indicated the evidence includes 30,000 pages of records on horses, banking and auction documents, and recordings of 2,000 phone calls. Investigators reportedly seized approximately 200 boxes of evidence during the June raids that triggered the arrests.
