. . . the Vessels Stallion Farm left a great legacy in Quarter Horse racing through the pedigrees of our horses running today.
Dash For Cash and Streakin Six somewhere in the pedigree.
The success of crossing Dash For Cash and Streakin Six is a nick. A nick is the phenomenon that occurs when certain stallions from one bloodline cross well with mares from another bloodline. When we look at many of these crosses, we find a common ancestor or ancestors between the stallion and mare that have nicked. We call the appearance of these common ancestors a blood affinity. Direct Win represents a blood affinity between Dash For Cash and Streakin Six.
A DIRECT CONNECTION IN 2016
Zulu Dragon, the 2016 #1 Leading Freshman Sire of money earners, gives us another look at the Dash For Cash/Streakin Six nick. Zulu Dragon is sired by First Down Dash by Dash For Cash, and he is out of Hidden Dragon by Dean Miracle by Streakin Six.
This 2007 stallion is a 2-time stakes winner in the 2011 La Plata Stakes-G2 and the 2012 James Isaac Hobbs Stakes-G2.
He finished second in the Jet Moore Handicap-G3, West Texas Maturity-G2, and KFOX-FM Radio Handicap-G3. He earned $181,009 from 29 starts, including six wins,
 five seconds, and one third.
Zulu Dragon had nine starters, five
winners, four ROM, and two stakes winners in 2016. They earned $699,236 for the year and, with just nine starters, he was #16 on the leading sire of 2 year old money earners list. A look at Zulu Dragon’s foals shows us another example of the power of the Dash For Cash/Streakin Six nick.
Zulu Dragon’s leading money winner
is Running Dragon with total earnings of $373,833. She won the New Mexico Spring Futurity-RG2 and the Mountain Top Futurity- RG3 in 2016 and started 2017 with a win in the Shue Fly Stakes-RG2. The filly’s latest win was a 1 1/2-length victory in the Feb. 19 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes. With this latest win, her earnings now top over $500,000. Running Dragon is out of Banking Lane by Devon Lane TB. The dam of Banking Lane is Banking Disco by Strait To The Bank by Dash For Cash.
The second leading money winner by Zulu Dragon is Magnifico Dragon, earner of $291,221. He won the 2016 New Mexico Classic Futurity-RG2 and was second in the Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1 and in the 2017 Shue Fly Stakes-RG2 (behind
Running Dragon). The dam of Magnifico Dragon is Cassie Mag by Magnificence by Sir Alibi by Streakin Six.
The other three winners by Zulu Dragon are Cowgirlsalady, Mighty B Dragon, and Disco Dragon.
Mighty B Dragon is a race winner in 2016, and now he is stakes placed in the 2017 Shue Fly Stakes-RG2 with a third to Running Dragon and Magnifico Dragon. The dam of Mighty B Dragon is Mighty B Perry by Mr Jess Perry by Streakin La Jolla by Streakin Six. The dam of Mighty B Perry is Mighty B Doll by On A High by Dash For Cash.
Disco Dragon was a 2016 winner and a stakes finalist in the New Mexico Spring Futurity-RG2, a race won by Running Dragon. He is a 3/4-brother to Running Dragon, as his dam is Banking Disco, the second dam of Running Dragon.
Direct Win is a stallion that we often see in the pedigree of the modern racehorse, but we didn’t know much about him. Now we
see the role he played in the scheme of things and the genetic basis of that contribution, and we now know more about where he came from. That is important for our wise use of the pedigree as a selection tool.
