Pan Zareta made Quarter Horse racing history by defeating Joe Blair (right), sire of the immortal Joe Reed.
Pan Zareta ran against the speediest horses of her time. She broke world records and track records by the score. She success- fully carried weight up to 146 pounds.
One of the great chroniclers of American turf, John Hervey, once wrote of Pan Zareta, “She was one of the
most wonderful pieces of horseflesh of which Turf history makes mention.” She was the only mare in the history of the American turf to have won more than 50 races.
The great Pan Zareta was born in 1910, out of a cross- bred Quarter and Thoroughbred dam and by Abe Frank, a Thoroughbred son of the famous Hanover, leading sire of 1895, ’96, ’97 and ’98. She was truly bred to run, but more obvious than all, she represented the harmonious blending of the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred for the creation of a perfectly-bred sprinter.
Quarter racing history was written in Juarez, Mexico some fifty-five years ago when the chestnut Pan Zareta threw dust into the face of Joe Blair, sire of the immortal Joe Reed, who founded a dynasty in the world of Quarter Horses. The world record, which Pan Zareta set in that race at five furlongs, was to stand for over thirty-five years.
Pan Zareta, a name which will go down in the legends of time. We proudly present Wayne Heath Porter’s beautiful poem relating the historic match race between Joe Blair and the unbelievable Pan Zareta on February 10, 1915.
