 The first yearling sale of the season was held July 28-29 in San Antonio, Texas. The 20th annual Texas Quarter Horse Association Yearling Sale saw 187 horses sell over two days, marking an increase over last year. Gross sales were up 19% over last year and sale average was up 8%. The median price, however, dropped a slight 1% over 2016.
Hip #284, Sunnysyde (Heza Fast Dash- Havanah Goodtime, Ivory James), was the sale topper at $160,000. Consigned by Bobby D. Cox, the brown yearling colt was purchased by Dillon D. Lane. Sunnysyde is a half-brother to stakes winners Duponte and Nymeria and is out of a half-sister to Champion Brimmerton.
Cox also consigned and Lane also pur- chased the second highest seller at $102,000, Hip #247, Sygnified (Tempting Dash-Jess Significant, Mr Jess Perry). The sorrel yearling colt is a half-brother to Champion Significant Heart, is out of a stakes winner, and his second dam is 2-time Champion Significant Speed.
Two additional horses reached the $100,000 mark: Hip # 142, Deal Em Quick (Dealagame-Quickid Perry), consigned by Pete A. Scarmardo, Granada Farms, Agent and purchased by Mary G. Thompson and Pete Scarmardo; and Hip # 242, Zimmerli (Captain Courage-Quick Moon Sign, Royal Quick Dash), consigned by Bobby D. Cox and purchased by Rancho La Cobra.
The leading buyer was Dillon D. Lane, purchasing the top two sellers for a total of $262,000. The leading consigner/agent was Bobby D. Cox, selling 27 horses for $800,400. The leading sire was Tempting Dash with 14 head selling for $435,000.
On Saturday, July 29, prior to the second day of the TQHA Yearling Sale, the American Quarter Horse Association provided coffee and breakfast while hosting a Hispanic Open Forum to recognize the impact that Hispanic involvement has on the racing industry and to allow members to discuss how the AQHA can better serve the racing community.
